The AUTM Technology Valuation Course teaches the fundamentals of technology valuation as specifically applied to academic licensing. The first half of the course examines basic concepts such as the components of value, risk, diligence terms, milestones, the variety of ways to capture value, and negotiating value with the other party. Basic valuation methodologies are discussed, including cost, industry standards (comparables), value allocation, decision trees, and the various uses of Discounted Cash Flow, Net Present Value and Equity. The first half concludes with a review of payment structures within a license. The second half of the course consists of case studies derived from real world examples. The class will be divided into groups which will develop and present license term proposals for various technologies. If you have responsibility for negotiating licenses, the AUTM Valuation Course is for you. Prerequisites: you should have a basic familiarity with the structure of diligence and royalty terms used in an academic license, be familiar with IP-related Web searching, Excel spreadsheets and the basics of Discounted Cash Flow and Net Present Value. This course is fast-paced and encourages active attendee participation.
