The new European Unitary Patent system is open for business, which means universities now have a choice when it comes to filing patent applications in Europe: as a unitary patent valid in most European nations, as a traditional patent valid in a specific nation or a combination of the two approaches. The unitary patent system is intended to harmonize national laws, reduce costs, and encourage European innovation, but benefits coincide with risks in the new patent landscape.
