Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health, and Society (SACGHS)
On March 9, 2009 the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health, and Society (SACGHS) released its Public Consultation Draft Report on Gene Patents and Licensing Practices and Their Impact on Patient Access to Genetic Test. The report contains worthwhile research. The most significant area of concern is the policy options offered in the report. As stated on the SACGHS website, “These options do not necessarily correlate with any particular preliminary finding, but rather provide a framework within which to gather public input.” With no connection to the research findings AUTM is troubled by the suggested policy options.
AUTM’s response was submitted to SACGHS on May 5, 2009. AUTM asked its members to review this letter and submit comments prior to the deadline which was May 15, 2009. A template letter was prepared to assist with this process.
