AUTM Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011

FY2011 Licensing Data Available Online

Licensing data for fiscal year 2011 is available through STATT 3.1 (Statistics Access for Tech Transfer). STATT 3.1 is a searchable, exportable database that contains data collected by AUTM over the last 20 years and allows for individualized searches of information about U.S. and Canadian institutional research expenditures, patent filings and expenditures, licensing activities, and startup creation. This new version also features improvements to the way exported data is organized.

All members whose institutions participated in the 2011 survey receive a free annual subscription to STATT. Members from nonparticipating institutions can purchase an annual subscription for $100. The annual subscription fee for nonmembers is $450.

The AUTM U.S. Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011 is the most comprehensive report of its kind and demonstrates how technology transfer professionals assist researchers in bringing new products and services to market for the benefit of society and the economy.

NEW! This year AUTM included additional questions to better ascertain the societal impact of university technology transfer. Two of the new questions were:

1. What were the sales in 2011 of licensed products reported by your licensees?
2. What was the total employment of your startup companies in 2011?

Highlights from the AUTM U.S. Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011 include:

• 591 new commercial products introduced
• 4,899 licenses executed
• 1,152 options executed
• 416 executed licenses containing equity
• 38,600 active licenses and options
• 670 new companies formed, 487 of which had their primary place of business in the licensing institution’s home state
• 3,927 startup companies still operating as of the end of FY2011

Highlights from the AUTM Canadian Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011 include:

• 110 new commercial products created
• 68 new companies formed and 100 percent had their primary place of business in the licensing institution’s home province
• $5,809.4 million total research expenditures
• 849 new patent applications filed

For the past several years, AUTM has released highlights of its annual Licensing Activity Survey to AUTM members several months prior to the release of the survey reports.

This year, in an effort to provide members and survey participants with meaningful survey data sooner, AUTM has published the institution-specific information (data appendix) at the same time as the Highlights of the AUTM U.S. Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011 and the Highlights of the AUTM Canadian Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011. Survey participants received the survey highlights and the data appendix Aug. 27. If your institution participated in the FY2011 survey, you should contact the person at your institution who responded to the survey to review a copy of the data appendix. You will also have access to the FY2011 information in STATT. If your institution did not participate in the survey, you may purchase the data appendix (see pricing below).
